Metamorphosis

"Papa kehte hain...", that was the song playing on the old speaker system of the rickety bus. The bus had stopped en-route at a small village. The aroma of freshly fried samosas filled the air. The sun had just come out and slowly the golden yellow sunlight was engulfing everything in its warmth. As I stared out of the window I saw a mother lovingly combing the hair of her son, apparently getting him ready for school. Her son was a cute but restless kid who had a frown on his face. He wanted to join his friends who were waiting nearby so that they could go to school together. But the mother was taking her time ensuring that not a single hair was out of place. And why not? For a mother, the most beautiful child in the world is her own. After what seemed like an eternity for the kid, he broke out of his mother's embrace and ran fast to join his friends. I smiled at the episode played out in front of me. Here's the kid wanting to rush out to the outside world. And here I am who wants to go back, who does not want to leave, who wants to stay for some more time. I was going out of my city for the first time. My school had finished and I had got admission to a reputed college in another state. I was very excited on getting into such a good college and the prospect of leading an independent life but I never expected that I would miss home so much so soon. My smile changed into a sigh as my childhood flashed in front of my eyes. Getting dressed for school, the morning milk I hated so much, the scolding received on spoiling the clothes by playing in dirt, the craze for the wrist watch, the oh-so-dreaded visits to the barber shop, the small-at-home birthday parties with all neighbourhood kids, the big blue sky covered in small, colourful, diamond shaped tiles called kites. Aah, I am going to miss everything so much. Suddenly, a loud noise and vibration broke my reverie. Both the noise and the vibration were coming from my pocket. I fished out my cell phone and a tear rolled down my cheek as I saw on the screen, "Mom calling".

Peculiar!!

All of us want a mostly normal life. We don't want our life to be unpredictable. In fact, every human being wants to make minimum decisions. For eg. Remember the time when you used to attend any type of lecture/class. Most likely you used to sit at a particular place even when all other places were equally good to sit. The reason is everyday your mind does not like to decide where to sit. Hence, you sub-conciously pick a seat and try to always sit there. Then again, waiting for a bus/train is very painful. The reason being you are not sure when it is going to come(unpredictable) and hence continuously keep checking the latest update. You could easily sit down and do something else. If you are sitting on the right platform, you will obviously see the train whenever it arrives. Thus, all of us like everything to be predictable and normal.

Now comes the interesting part. In contrast to real life, we always appreciate things out of the ordinary in any art. For eg. A normal photograph showing a normal house or an office with people in it is boring but if its a photo of Amitabh Bacchhan's house, people are interested. A movie with a normal story line is boring. For that matter, just think about your circle of friends from school. You will most likely remember only the odd ones(the most studious, the most funny etc.)

We are peculiar, aren't we?

NOT Bad!! I say!

The usual Mars-Venus comparison

Girls: A girl came home very late. She told her father that she was at friend's house. The father called 10 of her friends but all of them told that she had not come at their place.

Boys: A boy didn't come home one night. Next day, he told father that he had slept at his friend's house. Father called 10 of his friends, 8 of them confirmed he had slept in their house and the remaining 2 claimed he was still there.

:)

:)

Whenever you are down and out, whenever you are feeling low, everything just seems bad, only few people really care. I feel lucky to have the selfless love of my parents who accept me as I am. They never want to change me except when I am doing something totally wrong. And they always want me to be happy and they are ready to sacrifice their own feelings or happiness for that. And this is not only during the time when I was a kid. The same feelings are there throughout the life. I am really grateful to GOD for giving me such parents and their love. I wish they will always be with me and that I will always keep them happy.
I am also lucky to have a truly outstanding sibling who knows me totally and understands everything. We share a really special relationship and I wish we continue the same way hamesha.

:) Pata nahi kyun likha hai.. just felt like writing.. :)

The moment of realization

He stared anxiously at the machine. In a few seconds, his life would be changed. He started to think about the consequences. No more enduring the loud-mouthed neighbour. No more reading newspaper at the bus stop. No more watching cricket at the corner tea shop. No more "if only". The constant beeping of the machine broke his amusing reverie and out came the crisp green bills - his first salary!

The first drop of rain

Finally...

The struggle was really long and painful and now when it is over, surprisingly, he did not feel happiness. It was as though he was emotionally discharged because of all he had to go through. No, it was not physical labour. This one was purely psychological, the feeling of helplessness, wishing to control life, wanting to set things as they ought to be, the agony of not being where one wants to. The constant effort to keep oneself motivated, happy or look happy at least. All the while, knowing at the back of the mind, still there is something missing.

But that's past now. There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel, a ray of hope, a new beginning.
It is like the first drop of rain after a hot, grueling summer. It is like having a sunny day after long, dark winter. Feeling of warmth, feeling of relief. A smile comes to his lips now, the smile is not really of happiness. It is a smile of triumph over yet another difficult phase. It is a smile of wonder, as though questioning the Almighty, how many more mountains to climb, how many more "Agni Pareekshas " to go through? It is a smile of finally being able to enjoy the small things in life, at least for a while. And finally it is also a smile of excitement, the eagerness of meeting that someone special after such a long time.......

Dil Chahta Hai!!

Elections are almost there. Most of the voters have wishes and expectations from the new government. My case is different though, I would list down a few things which the government may not be able to provide, but it would definitely be a great life once I have them.

  • Travel at the speed of light. Now, it does seem impossible, but lets suppose it was indeed possible. What could be the outcomes? We would have lots of such travel machines(Brand Name eg: Travelight) in the market. Just buy one, enter the latitude, longitude of where you want to be and sit in the machine. Thats it. Whenever there will be a India-Pak match going on, it would have to be held in some extra large stadium as anyone from any corner of the world could beam in to see the match. There would be no distance at all. No concept of being away, maybe no need of phones even. Well, hopefully the roads would be less crowded and people will use vehicles only for the joy of driving. Airline companies will be closed down, similar could be the fate of railways. You could go to work in Buffalo, New York and stay at Bhatinda. Possibilities are endless.
  • Ability to fly. Now this has been the dream of mankind since ages. The thought itself is sufficient to make you feel good. Looking for some fresh air after the dinner, just find an opening to the sky and fly away. Roam around the city, play with clouds or just fly off to a hill. There could be then flying restaurants and cafetarias as well. Interesting.
  • Ability to breathe in water. After sky, yet another unexplored area will open up for human exploration. Similar to rock climbing/trekking expeditions, we would have sea/lake diving expeditions. Hydro-tourism would be the new catch word. This may actually lead to cleaning up of over-polluted water bodies like rivers for the sake of making profit out of them. Imagine, Ambanis cleaning up the Ganga and charging a token fees for anything more than a bath in the holy river.
These are just some of the first things that came to my mind. Would post some more when I think of more. Those reading the post should comment about their wishes as well. Would love to hear about your wishes.

How did Mutalik and LeT crack our code?

Really liked the insight provided on the Mangalore issue in this CNN-IBN blog. Credited to Mr. Zubin Driver - CNN IBN.

(Terrorism strategy in the reality TV age.)

Mutalik was a NOBODY before his goons launched a very strategic attack.

After years of goofing around in the wilderness, he suddenly realized that India only takes notice if you hit her in her soft underbelly. The upper middle classes and their icons are the only relevant target for a terrorist like Kasab or a gender terrorist like Mutalik.

Their strategy is the same. It says very clearly; if you want media attention and 'national' attention, you need to wage a symbolic war against the icons of the upper classes in India. Only then will you become an instant national icon...and now, an international icon.

Mutalik does not care about the upper middle class and the pub going Indian.

He is willing to beat them up to prove he does not care. He is concerned with a massive body of conservative and very right wing Indians who don't go to pubs or live in upper middle class areas. These folks secretly love guys like Mutalik who express their deepest prejudices and take the hit from India's liberals. These folks are like the silent consensus that Hitler and the Nazi party had before WW II. The mass of Germans never joined up, they just stood by and nodded quietly while Hitler went about his warped work.

The Pink Chaddi brigade is fodder for Mr. Mutalik; he is now using them to win some very strategic points:

1. The Higher Moral Ground: Mutalik is now saying that "look at these vulgar people, they remove their underwear and post it." Now, while this is not a shocking statement for the cool middle classes, it is a shocker of a movement for the mass of conservative Indians. The means of protest used make sure that Mutalik's slate is wiped clean. Indian's suffer from amnesia; they will forget that Mutalik went about beating innocent women and only remember 'pink chaddis'. They will then co-relate it with their daughters and say "I don't want my daughter getting spoilt and crazy, why should she remove her underwear and post it??" Mutalik WANTS this to happen, he is waiting for the silent consensus to happen, and it is.

2. Switch on the Media Circus: Instead of campaigning for his arrest and trial, Indian's are trying to condemn him using the Indian media. It's the great Indian trial by Media, which is no more than a prime time TRP farce. Unfortunately, the media just becomes the best possible PR agency for Mutalik. He LOVES the media attention he is getting...here is a guy who reportedly could not get 3 journalists for a press conference, now getting calls from EVERYONE. He loves the spot-light, look at how he has changed strategy? He is talking about sending saris, he is talking about taking 'erring' young couples back home, into the arms of their beloved conservative parents. He is in control now, do we realize this? On how many cases in India has the media really brought about an effective trial and resolution? Miniscule is the answer, and here, we are NOT talking trial, arrest or jail term, we are talking about pink chaddis and saris and Valentine's Day. It's a great 'soft' story.

3. Move from extreme violent and idiotic right to somewhere in the same space of MNS, Sena, Bajrang Dal, RSS, etc. He is evolving his ideology as we speak, making statements carefully tailored to the Indian conservative class. Let's remember that the Shiv Sena in Mumbai has been breaking down valentine day celebrations for years...it is acceptable to the Indian middle classes, the Shiv Sena was voted into Mumbai BMC and ruled Maharashtra in the past...it remains the most powerful party in cool Mumbai!. . Interestingly, in an act of sheer political opportunism, the MNS have realized that Valentine's Day is a youth iconic celebration and in complete contradiction to their normal spiel have issued a statement talking about "Valentine day being a youth celebration". They have realized they cannot isolate the youth of Mumbai; their support base will get hit. Mutalik is just re-hashing an old trick; he will oppose Valentine's Day this year and then maybe even forget about it next year...he opposes it because the people who celebrate Valentine's Day are not his market right now. They are his actors in HIS play. His audience sits elsewhere. When the cool youth become his market, he will issue a similar statement to the MNS. The fact that Gehlot from the Congress party started talking about 'pub culture' ASAP is proof that politicians sense that Mutalik has struck a chord with a massive amount of conservative Indians who will not dare step out and say anything right now because they will not be associated with women beating....but yes, they are against women drinking and dating in pubs. The congress knows this, the BJP knows this, the Sena, MNS and more, practice this. Mutalik is just the latest monster kid on the block.

How can you really crush the Indian Taliban?

Obviously the media will tire of 'pink chaddis' and Valentine's day will pass, like it does every year. The actors have changed, the plot remains the same. This requires a deeper and more serious long term engagement.

1. Gender sensitization from school level. Gender equality has to be inculcated into our children from day one. It has to enter the DNA of the education system

2. Parents have to treat their kids equally, and inculcate respect and fair play values in each gender.

3. Laws for gender offenders have to become very severe and very effective.

4. All 'male' bastions have to be broken into and converted into unisex spaces....from corporate life, domestic life, armed forces; every walk of life should carry NO bias at all. ( A huge an on-going process driven by women)

5. A strong and empowered NGO/Lawyer lobby that should file cases immediately after criminals like Mutalik are let out on bail. Our social sector is limp and unresponsive right now.

6. A mature and intelligent protest mechanism that is inclusive and works scientifically to isolate and punish offenders. People need to think about whose interests they serve with every public action they undertake. Who benefits? Who are the stake-holders and who finally gains in equity?

7. Hurt offenders where they get hurt. A character like Mutalik can only be squashed if you convince HIS market of what a criminal he is. They need to be told that beating women is not Indian culture (which they will agree to). The silent majority need to be convinced in a non-threatening way that their values are being hijacked by imposters. The religious leaders need to step in and convince their flocks that this is not the real meaning of Indian culture. The radical has never convinced the conservative. The conservative is convinced by the less conservative.

8. Bring up the cases of gender abuse from all over India, from poor India, the cases that no one gives a rat's ass about. Make cool Mumbaikar's like me campaign for the two and half year old street child who was raped and thrown into a gutter in Mumbai one month back...it was a 3 line report buried deep in a paper. Today's Delhi Times inside pages talks about a love story between two youngsters in Bihar, where the whole family was BEHEADED because the parents of one kid disliked the match.

Why can't we send pink chaddis to them? Will they laugh as they behead us?

Our mixed up priorities, our national conscience, as shaped by the upper classes and the media are the new playground for any clever terrorist of the spirit. We should let go of our class fetishes and start wondering why we don't protest when poor people get mutilated, when rural Indian's get beheaded and when we read the abysmal statistics of rape conviction throughout India. If the LET has dumped Kashmir and realized a Mumbai attack on a Hotel works millions of times better for them, if Mutalik has realized that beating up women in a pub will pay better dividends than screaming in rural Karnataka, then perhaps we need to pay closer attention to Kashmir and what's brewing in rural Karnataka? Both the LeT and the Mutalik brigade are examples of non-local attacks. They teach us that terrorists and gender terrorists have cracked our code. They know how to get us all tied up in knots. They know that we only hurt when you hurt us in our soft underbelly...our pubs, hotels and our icons of the rich and well heeled.

Cherries

Johnny stood beside his mother as she made her selection from the fruit-seller's wagon, and the farmer told the boy to take a handful of cherries, but the child shook his head.

"What's the matter? Don't you like them?" asked the fruit-seller.
"Yes," replied Johnny.
"Then go ahead an' take some."

Johnny hesitated, whereupon the farmer put a generous handful in the boy's cap. After the farmer had driven on, the mother asked:
"Why didn't you take the cherries when he told you to?"
"'Cause his hand was bigger than mine."
